On 5 December 2023, Judge Nicolas Guillou of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers (KSC), was elected as a Judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC). Judge Guillou was appointed as Judge of the KSC on 7 February 2017 and has served as the Pre-Trial Judge in the cases against Messrs Hysni Gucati and Nasim Haradinaj, Mr Salih Mustafa, Mr Hashim Thaçi and his co-accused, Mr Pjetër Shala and Messrs Sabit Januzi and Ismet Bahtijari. Judge Guillou is also serving as the Single Judge in the case against Mr Isni Kilaj.

The President of the KSC, Judge Ekaterina Trendafilova – who herself was a Judge of the ICC before joining the KSC – congratulated Judge Guillou and noted that his election is “a reflection of Judge Guillou’s unwavering commitment to the field of international criminal justice, as already demonstrated through his tremendous dedication to the KSC, where he has served as the Pre-Trial Judge or Single Judge in all the cases currently before the court”.

President Trendafilova remarked that while the KSC will lose a valuable Judge and colleague when Judge Guillou takes up his position as Judge of the ICC, the cases before the KSC will not be impacted and they will proceed without interruption.

Judge Guillou’s biography can be found on the KSC’s website.
